An official webpage of a popular modern military game, Arma2, was attacked by an Iranian hacker group called Persian Black Hats Boys (p8h8) at 12:00 CEST today. The p8h8, also known as "p3R51An 8lacK Hat5 8oy5" to the security community are a well established hacker group known for their inventive defacing attacks. A website defacing attack is an attack, whereby the hacker logs onto a webserver as an administrator and changes the look of the page. The p8h8 is known for politically motivated attacks and it is speculated the attack is in relation with a new project by Bohemia Interactive that has not been announced yet.

The attack itself was remedied soon after it was discovered, but the message from p8h8 threatens that further attacks will take place every 42 hours. The security breach was eliminated, but as Jan Nohatý, an electronic security specialist, said: 'They (hackers) are always one step ahead of us. I do not believe they will hack us in the next 42 hours again as we strengthened our security measures significantly. Our affiliated websites, forums and fan pages however should be aware as they could be connected with our business activity and therefore face certain level of risk.'

A link to a mirror of the defaced webpage on an ANN server follows. No security risk arises from clicking on the link.

According to Bohemia Interactive marketing materials, the company creates simulation terrain according to real terrain data. So the speculation is that the hacker's claims and photos point to a real location. Why would the hackers point to such a place remains unknown. We are not able to locate the spot nor send an investigator to find out the truth.
